Shannon CSI 10th Quarterly Technical Assistance Meeting on Police Gang Definitions and School and Service Provider Partnerships: Monday August 10, 2009

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and Northeastern University hosted their 10th Charles E. Shannon CSI Quarterly TA Meeting on Monday August 10, 2009 from 9:30-1:30PM at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester Ma. The meeting consisted of a presentation on Defining Individuals as a Gang Member and Comparing State and Locally Used Models, as well as Identifying the Benefits of a Shared Model, and How to Best Utilize Gang Data. This was followed by a presentation by Northeastern University on School and Service Provider Relationships.

Shannon CSI 9th Quarterly Technical Assistance Meeting: Shannon Year 2 Report Findings: Wednesday April, 22, 2009

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and Northeastern University hosted their 9th Charles E. Shannon CSI Quarterly TA Meeting on Wednesday April, 22, 2009 from 9:30-1:30PM at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester Ma. The meeting consisted of a presentation by EOPSS and Northeastern, highlighting the major findings of the Shannon CSI Year 2 Report, and participation from members of the Governor's Youth Council and youth representatives from some of the Shannon Communities providing their reaction to the report results, and their opinions on what is effective and ineffective with regards to programs and services for high risk or gang involved youth.

Charles E. Shannon Community Safety Initiative 8th Technical Assistance Meeting on Steering Committee & Program Director Models and School and Police Partnerships: Tuesday, December 16, 2008.

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and Northeastern University hosted their final Shannon Community Safety Initiative Technical Assistance meeting for 2008. The meeting was held Tuesday, December 16, 2008 from 9:30 til 2:00 PM at Northeastern University. Sessions included an overview of the importance of a steering committee / program director model in managing communication across the collaboratives; and a presentation and panel discussion on best practices for creating and maintaining successful partnerships between the schools and police.(All notes and materials from the meeting are available on the Shannon CSI website under technical assistance meeting materials.)

Charles E. Shannon Community Safety Initiative 7th Technical Assistance Meeting on Street Outreach: Friday, July 11, 2008.

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and Northeastern University hosted its 7th Technical Assistance Meeting on Friday, July 11,2008 from 9:30 til 2:00 PM at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Ma. The meeting focused on best practices to successfully implement and sustain a street outreach program as well as the importance of providing support for street outreach workers dealing with trauma. Charles E. Shannon Community Safety Initiative Outcome Measurement Meeting: Wednesday May 16, 2008.

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and Northeastern University hosted a Shannon Community Safety Initiative meeting on Friday, May 16, 2008 from 10-12 PM at Northeastern University, Room 440 Egan Center. Approximately 35 partners attended this special meeting, which was particularly for all Shannon CSI program managers and partners who had questions about collecting data or concerns about outcome measurement for the CSI grants. Charles E. Shannon Community Safety Initiative, March 28th Technical Assistance Meeting

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security in collaboration with the H.O.P.E. Collaborative of New Bedford, in conjunction with the statewide research partner, Northeastern University sponsored the Shannon Community Safety Initiative Technical Assistance Meeting - Focus on Youth. The meeting was held Friday, March 28, 2008 from 9:30 - 2:00 PM at the Whaling Museum in New Bedford. The meeting included a series of workshops, of which the descriptions are listed below,and a keynote address by Paul Joyce, SuperIntendant of the Boston Police Department.

The meeting included four workshops featuring Shannon CSI partners which are listed below:

1) Strategies for sustaining collaborations and enhancing youth development

This panel highlighted successful strategies collaboratives have used to engage community members, particularly youth in the goal setting and implementation of Shannon CSI activities over time. The panelists discussed tools that have been developed to monitor youth needs, participation and satisfaction with Shannon CSI programming and discussed how this information can be useful as collaboratives work to sustain and enhance momentum for the initiative in their local community.

2) Street outreach work

This panel provided an overview of street outreach models, including the goals and expected outcomes of street outreach programs. Information was provided on the best practices for developing and implementing street outreach programs. Panelists also discussed the benefits and challenges of street outreach programs.

3) Prevention services and coordinated case management

This panel addressed the unique needs and challenges of providing re-entry programming to youth returning to their community. Panelists discussed how re-entry panel models can be used to identify the needs of re-entering youth and develop strategies for connecting youth to the appropriate services.

4) Youth re-entry programs

This panel discussed strategies for using case management information to monitor the progress of Shannon program participants and aid in the development or modification of existing Shannon programming.

Additionally, a Community-Youth Dialogue Session was held during the workshops for interested participants. The two-hour dialogue session was designed for Shannon collaborative members who are thinking of starting a youth-community dialogue process in their community. This session helped groups identify specific local needs they may have for youth community-dialogues, understand the youth-community dialogue process and begin planning their own youth-community dialogues. Group members participated in mock dialogues and engaged in brainstorming activities with members of their collaborative.


Charles E. Shannon Community Safety Initiative, January 9th 2008 Technical Assistance Meeting

On January 9th, Northeastern University and the Executive Office of Public Safety sponsored its first quarterly technical assistance meeting for the Shannon Community Safety Initiative Communities and their Local Action Research Partners, for 2008. The technical assistance session consisted of a panel dicussion entitled, "Race and Policing: Strengthening Police and Community Relationships" which was facilitated by Jeffrey Stone, from CityWide Dialogues on Boston's Ethnic and Racial Diversity. This discussion priamrily focused on the benefits and challenges of creating and strengthening communication between police and community residents and how it relates to effective community policing strategies. The afternoon session consisted of a presentation by Jack McDevitt, from Northeastern University about how to conduct dialogues about race within individual communities. Following this, was a discussion led by Tracy Brown and Keith O'Brien from EOPSS on the new quarterly report format developed for Shannon communities in year 2. The afternoon concluded by giving communities 15 minutes to break out into groups and make note of any issues they encountered during the data collection process. After this, communities reported on their preliminary list of outcome measures and also discuss any problems they encountered during this process.
