Haverhill and Methuen have partnered with Professor Emily Rothman and her research staff from the Boston University School of Public Health for Shannon CSI. In Year One of the grant, the researchers conducted an assessment of the gang problem in Haverhill high school and middle schools, and facilitated planning and evaluation of an initial classroom-based prevention program. Over the course of the year, they also conducted a prevention needs assessment with a focus group study, helped develop an after-school program, reviewed middle school anti-violence conferences, and evaluated the effectiveness of joint patrols. In keeping with the action research model, this research is used by Shannon CSI partners to enhance their understanding of the problem and better direct prevention and suppression efforts.Contact:
