Northeastern University’s Institute of Race and Justice (IRJ) is New Bedford’s Shannon CSI Local Action Research Partner. The IRJ uses a collaborative approach, working with community stakeholders to direct research on issues of racial and social justice. Professor Sean Verano leads the Shannon CSI research for New Bedford.IRJ researchers work with the Police Department and service providers to monitor and guide suppression and prevention efforts in New Bedford. They report to partners about best practices in problem-solving crime reduction strategies and provide technical assistance such as crime mapping and analysis, training, and development of data collection protocols. The IRJ also monitors and evaluates specific programs and strategies on an ongoing basis, providing feedback and guidance to partner agencies. The research partners ensure that partner agencies have a comprehensive understanding of the gang/youth violence problem in New Bedford and surrounding communities, and that they share consistent priorities as the project develops. IRJ researchers have worked closely with the New Bedford H.O.P.E. Collaborative partners to develop a client management and progress tracking system to evaluate the success of the Shannon CSI interventions in New Bedford.
