Worcester’s Action Research Partner is Clark University, with a research team led by Drs. Laurie Ross and Ellen Foley. The Start Our Success (SOS) program, which provides high-risk probationers employment support services, is the primary focus of this research partnership. Clark researchers have three major tasks. The first is determining a baseline of risk factors for gang involvement in Worcester from which to assess program outcomes. Second, they regularly collect data in the form of forms tracking participants as they progress through the program, observations, and interviews with participants, staff, employers, and Gang Unit officers. Because SOS is a new program, this data is useful for identifying implementation problems and successes. The third major task of the research partners is to support SOS partners by sharing research on best practices, providing feedback from the data, and assisting with problem solving. They attend trainings and information sharing meetings with other Shannon CSI research partners and meet with program stakeholders regularly.
